You might have heard of kefir, or milk kefir but have you heard of water kefir? Water kefir is a fermented, carbonated beverage that is produced using water kefir grains. Unlike milk kefir, water kefir can be consumed by vegans, too. Keeping our gut healthy with probiotics is vital in leading a healthy lifestyle. Thus, water kefir is one of the answers! It is packed with probiotics and this tasty drink has also been shown to amp up immunity, slow cancer cell growth and improve overall health. Similar to kombucha, water kefir is made by mixing water kefir grains (yeast and bacteria) with sugar water. The grains feast on the sugar, creating an acidic drink.
- Gut health
Kefir water is one of the best dietary sources of probiotics available and may contain up to 56 different strains of yeast and bacteria. - Weight Loss
Low in calories but loaded with flavour and fizziness, water kefir can definitely bring big benefits when it comes to your waistline. Instead of drinking sugary sodas, swap it for this low calorie drink! - Boosts Your Immune System
The probiotics that are in water kefir help regulate the body’s immune response. On top of that, kefir grains in particular have been shown to decrease inflammation.
I have successfully made water kefir myself and I couldn’t be more pleased! To me, it tasted like a mild kombucha. My grains have now multiplied and I’ve been giving them out. If you decide to give water kefir a go, ask around to see if anyone you know has any spare grains. And if you live in East London, drop me a line and you could pick some up from me.
Happy fermenting!
