Hello everyone,
Today, I am going to talk about the edible flower called the common broom. Spring comes quick and before you know it, it’s summer and all flowers have bloomed and withered. So, I am writing this blog post to inspire you and hopefully next year, you will be out there picking it yourself!
The Common Broom (Cytisus scoparius)
This shrub is found all around the country. It has bright yellow flowers that look like a broom. It’s very similar to Gorse, another shrub with bright yellow flowers, however, unlike the Broom shrub, the Gorse shrub is very prickly. The flowers don’t taste of much but they are an excellent addition to a salad. The buds of these flowers can be picked and added to salads as well, they have a nutty flavour. They can also be pickled, though I have not tried doing this yet.
I hope you feel inspired and let me know whether you try some Broom yourself!
Keep safe,
Ellie
